Terrell Owens not getting into the Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility was one of the biggest upsets in football this season. Jerry Rice who is one of the only wide receiver to ever get in on his first attempt had an amazing 20 year career. He played for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders and one season with the Seattle Seahawks. He had 22,895 receiving yards and 197 receiving touchdowns.
Terrell Owens by comparison played for 16 years for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. He had 15,934 receiving yards and 153 touchdowns. He was on track to have as many or maybe more receiving yards and touchdowns if he played the same amount of years as Jerry Rice and yet he was still snubbed of being a 1st ballot hall of famer.
Terrell Owens not making it into the Hall of Fame was best summed up by Hall of Famer and selection committee member Dan Fouts who said Owens was given a fair shot by the committee, but his reputation as a bad teammate kept him out of Canton. Proving that getting in is not just what you do on the field but also how you react off of it. Owens did himself no favors of getting in the Hall of Fame in the future after tweeting “HOF is a total joke. Honestly, doesn’t mean anything to me to get in beyond this point.” Obviously those words where said in anger and one can only hope that he gets in the future as it would be well deserved.
